Letting Go of Gear Ego: Evolving with the Tools That Serve the Story

As videographers, we build strong bonds with our gear. It becomes second nature. We know the buttons without looking. We dial in the settings before the screen lights up. Personally, I love shooting with the Sony A7S III and the Sony Alpha series in general. I’m also comfortable behind a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K. These are tools I’ve trusted for years—tools I know inside and out.
But here’s the thing: technology is moving fast. Faster than ever. And the question we all need to ask ourselves is this—are we adapting with it, or are we just holding onto the familiar out of habit?
Let me share a recent experience. I was running a production using my trusty A7S III mounted on a Ronin 3 gimbal. It’s a solid setup—but wow, it’s heavy. Yes, it’s lighter than a traditional cinema rig, but after a full day of run-and-gun shooting, you feel every ounce. Compare that to something like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. It fits in your palm. It captures smooth, gimbal-stabilized footage. It shoots in stunning quality. And you can carry it in your jacket.

So it made me think—why am I choosing the heavy rig when I have something that’s more portable, more efficient, and still delivers?
The answer is simple: conditioning.
We’ve been trained to believe that “real” videographers use cinema cameras. That professional means big lenses, heavy gimbals, and gear that looks the part. But here’s the truth—not every shoot needs that. Not every project demands a RED or an FX6. Sometimes, the smartest choice is the tool that lets you move faster, capture more, and focus on the story instead of the setup.
Let’s drop the gear ego.
Professionalism isn’t defined by the size of your rig. It’s defined by how well you tell the story, solve problems on set, and deliver consistent, compelling results. There’s a time and place for high-end gear, no question. But there’s also a time for simplicity—for using the right tool, not just the fanciest one.
So if you find yourself hesitating to use that smaller, smarter device—don’t. Embrace the tech. Adapt with it. Because the best camera is the one that lets you create without compromise.
